Maintaining good oral health by brushing, flossing and regular dental visits is a well-known fact among us. But did you know that by eating certain foods and drinks, can also increase the health of your mouth?

Here is a list of five foods and drinks to help you strengthen your healthy smile:

1. Cheese and Milk

Research has found that if you eat cheese or drink milk, it will neutralise the PH levels of the plaque acid in the mouth that harms teeth. Additionally the proteins, nutrients and calcium that are in cheese and milk strengthen the tooth enamel, which protects the teeth. By eating these products you can reduce the risk of tooth decay.

2. Apples

Although apples can be seen as a sweet food that should be avoided, due to the high sugar level content. Apples in moderation are actually an exemption and have many health benefits for your mouth. They are high in vitamin C, which is good for strengthening the gums and protecting the mouth from bacterial infection. Also, the actual action of eating an apple encourages saliva to produce in your mouth, which then washes away any bacteria and food particles. If you pack an apple in with your lunch and eat it at the end of the meal, it will give your mouth a decent clean until you can next brush your teeth.

3. Leafy Greens

Leafy greens are found on any healthy food list, as they are full of minerals and vitamins whilst also being low in calories. But did you know that they can also promote good oral health?  Leafy greens such as kale or spinach, contains calcium and folic acid. Calcium helps to build your tooth enamel and folic acid has a number of health benefits – including the treatment of gum disease in pregnant women.

4. Pumpkin Seeds and Sunflower seeds

Both of these types of seeds are rich in minerals including magnesium and zinc. Magnesium works with calcium which resists decay by building strong, protective enamel. If you lack magnesium in your diet, teeth may become weaker and more prone to cavities. Zinc can benefit your oral health by aiding the healing of any wounds in the mouth.
