How To Keep Your Child’s Teeth Healthy Over The Summer holidays

The summer holidays can be a challenging time for parents, as the structure and norm of the school routine is interrupted. To avoid your child’s dental hygiene routine falling off the beaten track, try implementing some of the advice below.

Try to stick to similar brushing times

The school holidays mean brushing times may change, with your children getting up slightly later and perhaps going to bed later too. Try to stick to normal brushing hours as much as possible to retain some structure, especially with younger children who may find it harder to re-adapt to the school routine again. If your child is at a sleepover, perhaps have a word with their friend’s parents to ensure they brush their teeth before going to bed.

Orthodontic mouthguards for contact sports

Does your child partake in contact sports that have a summer league? Make sure their teeth are protected against the risk of dental injuries by having an orthodontic mouthguard made. These custom-created mouthguards offer a significantly higher level of protection than shop-bought versions, which are one-size-fit-all.

Arrange a hygienist appointment for older children

Children do not generally require a scale and polish to remove plaque and tartar as this is build-up that occurs over a longer period of time. However, one of the roles of a hygienist is to educate children and adults about how to look after their teeth and advise on brushing and flossing techniques.

Limit treats and sweets – find healthy alternatives

Diet and snacking is something that may be difficult to control throughout the school holidays, also as a result of the routine being disturbed. Try to introduce some healthier (but tasty)! snacks that can replace chocolate and confectionary. Gingerbread and yoghurt are good lower-sugar alternatives – why not try yoghurt with berries and honey for dessert or gingerbread for a post-beach snack?
