What do dental bridges do?
A dental bridge bridges the gap between one or more missing teeth. They are made up of two or more crowns for the teeth that sit either side of the gap – the two or more anchoring teeth are known as abutment teeth and a false tooth or teeth in between. The false teeth, called pontics, are made from alloys, gold, porcelain or a mix of these materials. Dental bridges need to be supported by implants or natural teeth.
Quick-fire of the benefits of dental bridges
- Restore and rejuvenate your smile.
- Restore confidence in yourself.
- Maintain your facial structure.
- Dental bridges distribute the forces in your bite correctly, by replacing missing teeth.
- Stop remaining teeth from drifting into the any vacant gaps, increasing chances of gum disease and build up of plaque and tartar.
What is the process behind getting a dental bridge?
On your first visit to us, the abutment teeth will be prepared, which involves removing some of the tooth enamel to make space for the crown to be placed over the top. Following this, your dentist can take impressions of your teeth which act as a model from which the bridge, crowns and pontic are made in a dental lab. Your dentist will make you a temporary bridge to wear, protecting your exposed gums and teeth whilst your permanent bridge is being made up.
Your second visit
The temporary bridge will be removed and the new porcelain or metal bridge will be adjusted to suit you. You may need to attend several more visits so that the perfect fit can be achieved. Following this, it can be fixed.
Dental bridges can last up to 15 years or more if properly looked after. You will need to attend regular hygeinst appointments and dental check-ups as well as brush and floss for the recommended time.
