Many people in the UK put off going to the dentist due to dental phobia, despite requiring treatment; dental phobia can range from mild discomfort and unrest to severe panic attacks and uncontrollable anxiety. Here at Cornerhouse we believe that no-one should have to endure a negative or worrying experience prior or during their visit to the dentist and we strive to make our practice feel as welcoming as possible.
Defining dental phobia
Dental phobia is often a general fear of dental treatment and even dentists themselves, though anxiety attacks can also be brought on by the sensual experience of a dental practice; sights, sounds and smells. For certain individuals, the phobia originates from a more specific source such as a fear of needles, pain, embarrassment or diagnosis.
IV sedation
If you have an extreme fear of the dentist, don’t suffer in silence, as IV sedation could change the way you feel about the dentist forever. IV (intravenous sedation) is administered via a small tiny needle on the back of the hand, known as a cannula and the effects are almost instantaneous, so you are immediately put at ease about treatment. The type of anaesthetic we uses here at Cornerhouse is an amnesic, so you will remember very little, if anything, about treatment however, you will still be able to co-operate with your dentist – for example, if required to open your mouth a little wider. Many patients find that after one procedure under IV sedation, subsequent treatment is anxiety-free and some patients feel they no longer need the help of IV sedation.
Did you know that nearly 50% of people in the UK suffer from some form of dental anxiety, with 12% suffering from an extreme form of phobia? Please do not be afraid to voice any concerns you might have about an upcoming treatment with us at Cornerhouse, as our staff are understanding and will support you in any way possible to help manage your fear.
If you would like to speak to a dentist about your worries surrounding a particular treatment, please get in touch with our friendly team who will be more than happy to talk you through how IV sedation can benefit you.
