Different types of floss

Flossing (1)

When it comes to flossing, there are so many different types of floss it can be difficult to know which one to buy.

Here are the different types of floss you can choose from:

Regular Floss

There is no difference between waxed and unwaxed floss.  The main thing that determines the level of effectiveness is your flossing technique.  Many people prefer wax coated floss because it slides in and out of your teeth easier than unwaxed floss.  Floss with mint coating is mainly used to make your breath smell and feel fresher.

Floss Picks

Floss picks are one of the most popular products as you only have to use one hand with them.  They are not necessarily as effective as regular floss as they don’t allow you to get in between those tricky angles that regular floss can.  You are supposed to be able to complete a “C” around each tooth for effective flossing which can’t be done as well using floss picks.

Oral Irrigators

An oral irrigator is a flossing device that uses a stream of pulsating water to remove plaque and food particles from between the teeth.  It is a new form of flossing that not only removes plaque, but improves your gingival health.  This method features a water reservoir that connects to a device resembling a toothbrush.  To use it properly, you should lean over the sink and place it in your mouth.

Here are some tips on how to floss properly, as flossing incorrectly can cause your teeth and gums to bleed.

  • Collect around 18 inches of floss and twist it around your two pointer fingers (or middle fingers), leaving a couple of inches to floss with.
  • Slide the floss gently up and down between your teeth.
  • Curve the floss in a “C” shape around each tooth, and make sure that you clean down to your gum line.
  • Use a new section of floss as plaque and food debris builds up.
