Have you heard of enamel fluorosis? No? It’s the mottling of teeth enamel as a result of overexposure to fluoride. Here, we outline what it is and how to avoid it.
Who is at risk?
The disturbance of tooth enamel tends to occur during tooth development. Because of this, the risk of enamel fluorosis is highest in your younger years- the most important period being between 1 and 4 years old.
What causes it?
One common cause is the overuse of dental products which contains fluoride, such as toothpaste or mouthwash. If a child particularly likes the taste of such a product, they may swallow rather than spit or try and use more than the recommended amount. Sticking to the recommended amount is extremely important with fluoride-containing products – if prescribed a fluoride supplement, you must ensure that you stick to the recommended amount only. And fluoride supplements should only be taken after consultation with your dentist as fluoridated drinking water or fortified drinks may already be providing the right amount. We urge parents to be vigilant.
What are the symptoms?
The answer to this depends on the severity of the fluorosis. The mildest cases may only be signified by tiny white flecks or spots, while the most severe cases can see all the enamel surface of the tooth affected and pitting all over the teeth.
