Flossing

‘If I brush my teeth thoroughly, I don’t need to floss as well’ is a common attitude regarding flossing and its necessity. However, the act of flossing has specific benefits that should be used in conjunction with regular and thorough brushing in order to take optimum care of your teeth. This partnership is one of the most effective ways that you can prevent tooth decay and any resulting problems. Here, we outline the information you need to get the most out of your flossing routine.
Technique

To floss effectively, use between one and two inches of floss to wrap around your teeth. Ensure the floss is tense by wrapping the excess around your fingers and pulling it taut. Now, steadily move the floss between your teeth in an up and down motion. Next, curve the floss around your teeth and bring it down into the gumline. Always make sure that you are gentle so as to not irritate the gums. It is best to use a new clean section of floss for every tooth.

Timing

Whether you floss prior to brushing your teeth or afterwards is entirely your choice. What is important is that you do it everyday, just like brushing your teeth.

Target

You are looking to get rid of the debris from food which your toothbrush cannot always reach. If it is not removed, bacteria in the mouth will use food debris as an energy source and will release acid as they do so, increasing the risk of tooth decay. By flossing away the debris, you are protecting your teeth from this.

Type

There are a whole host of options available to you. You could opt for regular floss or floss picks or an oral irrigator (this uses pulsating water to floss for you). Go ahead and test out different options to decide what’s best for you and remember that we are always here to help if you would like any advice.
