Why an orthodontic mouthguard?
Orthodontic mouthguards are custom made which makes them much more protective than shop-bought mouthguards. This is because the design is bespoke and perfectly fitted to your child’s tooth structure, whilst over-the-counter mouthguards are one-size-fits-all, very pliable and susceptible to a change in shape as well as containing excess room for teeth to become damaged.
Wearing a mouthguard will help to minimise the risk of injury and cuts from a brace.

You will be invited to attend an initial consultation so that we can outline what the process involves and what the benefits of wearing an orthodontic moutguards are. Following this, we will take impressions of your child’s teeth so that the mouthguard is an exact fit. Your mouthguard will be made up by the dental technician.
A little more on mouthguards …..
Mouthguards are made from impact-absorbing materials like polyethylene vinyl acetate (pEVA) which is odourless and tasteless and helps offer protection from impact. It is very durable if well looked after and not exposed to high temperatures. You should also place your mouthguard into a container after each use and rinse it after competing.
What else should I do to look after my mouthguard?
You should keep your mouthguard away from direct sunlight as this will contribute to the guard changing shape which will reduce its ability to protect your teeth. Check your mouthguard before each use to ensure that it is offering you the highest level of protection.
