Many of us will have heard the term ‘endodontics’ but few of us know what it actually means. Endodontics is an area of dentistry that that deals with the study, treatment, and diagnosis of the dental pulp and tissues that surround the root of a tooth. The term originates from the ancient Greek words ‘endo’ (inside) and ‘odont’ (tooth).
The purpose of endodontic treatment:
- Disinfecting an inflamed and infected root canal.
- Removing diseased pulp.
- Cleaning, filling, and reshaping the root canal system in order to prevent further infection and allow healing to take place.
What kind of issues require endodontic intervention?
- A patient who has suffered a dental trauma.
- Untreated tooth decay that has reached the inner chambers of a patient’s teeth – an endodontist can disinfect the area to save the tooth.
- An abscess, old filling, chipped and fractured teeth or infected dental pulp can all require endodontic treatment.
How do I know if I need endodontic treatment?
- Sensitivity to particularly hot or cold food and drink.
- Tooth is tender to touch.
- Pain when breaking down tough foods.
