What is root canal treatment
Root canal treatment or root canal therapy is a sequence of treatments which treats the infected pulp of a tooth. This eliminates the infection and protects the decontaminated tooth from future microbial invasion.
Initially we remove the decay and the source of the infection of the pulp. We then assess whether the lost tooth structure can be restored. If a fracture of the tooth has reached the pulp of the tooth or the infection is associated with gum disease, it may be a lot more difficult or even impossible to save the tooth, but we will do our best to save your tooth.
The root canal treatment
Root canal treatment can sometimes be completed within one visit but usually two or three visits may be necessary.
Root canal treatment involves little or no discomfort; very often there is pain or discomfort before treatment and root canal treatment provides relief from this.
With proper dental care, regular brushing and flossing, your root canal treated tooth may last a lifetime.
The cost largely depends on how severe the problem is. Molars with two or three canals are more difficult to treat and the fee may increase accordingly.
In the long term root canal treatment is usually more economical than any other alternative treatment.
At your consultation appointment any the concerns you may have with your teeth will be discussed in depth. In consultation with your dentist, you will then get to decide what the best course of action will be.
When examining your teeth, we may decide to undertake further investigations with the help of photographs and x-rays.
